His story
01 · The move

He relocated for work and landed somewhere that didn’t care he understood nothing — not the bank, not the pharmacy, not the landlord’s letter that turned out to be an eviction notice for a tenant who’d moved out two years earlier. He panicked for a week.

He was fluent in nothing, and alone in all of it.

So he did what nerds do when a problem refuses to leave: he obsessed over it. Grammar drills at 2 a.m. Flashcards on the fridge, the mirror, the shower door. Somewhere around month three, the goal changed from surviving to understanding. He fell in love with the architecture of language itself — the strange fact that every tongue on Earth solved the same ancient puzzle in a different way.

02 · The signal

Then the internet got weird. Late nights chasing pronunciation audio led him somewhere no dictionary should have gone. Not noise. Not static. A pattern. Too rhythmic to be random, too strange to ignore.

He didn’t sleep for three weeks. He built a decoder out of things that shouldn’t have worked together. He answered back.

Something answered too.

03 · The upgrade

Nobody agrees on what happened next — including him. He calls it a necessary upgrade and changes the subject. Dramatically. What’s left is obvious: eyes that don’t blink so much as refocus, a voice a little too even, and a man who hasn’t slept in years but doesn’t seem to miss it.

Now he lives in another galaxy, further from home than any linguist has ever traveled for a verb conjugation. And every day he helps total strangers learn the language of where they live — because he remembers exactly what it feels like to be the only one in the room who doesn’t understand what’s being said.

That’s the whole story, really. Someone once made him feel small for not knowing the language. So he crossed a galaxy to make sure it never happens to you.

He’ll still be dramatic about it, though. That part he kept on purpose.
