Urdu Language Test: Official Qualifications
Quick answer

Urdu is certified through national qualifications, and two official routes are open to learners. In India, the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language runs a One Year Diploma Course in the Urdu Language, taught through Hindi or English, with 12 assignments and a final written examination; the fee for a direct individual learner is 350 rupees. In the United Kingdom, exam boards offer GCSE Urdu, which tests listening, speaking, reading and writing in four papers worth 25% each, and Pearson Edexcel offers A level Urdu. The Indian diploma starts from the script and suits adults learning from scratch. The British qualifications are school exams, taken at the end of a course. The diploma course begins on 1 April each year, with registration closing on 28 February.

United Kingdom: GCSE Urdu

AQA's GCSE Urdu, specification 8648, has been taught since 2017. It is linear, which means all the exams are taken at the end of the course, and it comes in two tiers: Foundation, for grades 1 to 5, and Higher, for grades 4 to 9. You take all four papers at the same tier and in the same series.

  • Speaking has three parts: a role-play, a photo card and a general conversation.
  • Reading ends with a translation from Urdu into English.
  • Writing includes a translation from English into Urdu, of at least 35 words at Foundation Tier and 50 at Higher Tier.
  • The content is organised in three themes: identity and culture; local, national, international and global areas of interest; and current and future study and employment.

Pearson Edexcel offers its own GCSE Urdu, taught from September 2017, and an A level Urdu, taught from September 2018 with external assessment from 2020.

Which route fits you?

  • You are an adult starting from zero and can study through Hindi or English: the NCPUL diploma, which begins with the script.
  • You live in the UK and need a recognised school qualification: GCSE Urdu, then A level.
  • You already speak Urdu at home and want it on paper: GCSE or A level tests all four skills, including reading and writing the script.
  • You want to check your level informally first: work through past papers. AQA publishes past papers, mark schemes and examiners' reports.

How to prepare

  • Learn the script first. The BBC's guide notes that reading from right to left is one of the challenges for people used to left-to-right writing.
  • Memorise vocabulary with its exact pronunciation. The same guide warns that Urdu pronunciation is not always regular.
  • Practise the formal forms of address, which matter in speaking tests.
  • Use official papers and mark schemes for timed practice.
  • Test yourself instead of rereading. A 2013 review of learning research rated practice testing and distributed practice as high utility.

How long to get there

The US State Department places Urdu in Category III, hard languages, at about 44 weeks or 1,012 class hours for English speakers to reach a speaking and listening score of 3 on the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale. School-level qualifications and a first diploma come well before that. Language Lab's Urdu course is built around voiced real-life scenarios with an AI tutor, useful practice for a speaking paper.
