Tamil Language Test: Official Certificates
Quick answer

The official online route to a Tamil certificate is the Tamil Virtual Academy, TVA, which works under the Government of Tamil Nadu to provide Tamil education through the internet. Its Certificate course has three levels, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced, each with its own examination, and together they take a learner to the level of class 6 in Tamil Nadu schools. A Higher Certificate in three grades continues to the level of class 12, and diploma and degree programmes follow. The academy's fee structure lists a registration fee of US $15, or INR 400 from India, for each certificate level, and an examination fee of US $5 or INR 150. Its levels are defined by Tamil Nadu school class, so choose your level by what you can already read and write.

Who sets the test

The Tamil Virtual Academy was established as the Tamil Virtual University and functions under the administrative control of the Tamil Nadu government's Information Technology Department. It was renamed the Tamil Virtual Academy on 16 July 2010. Its mission includes conducting certificate, higher certificate, diploma and degree courses in Tamil, and its stated aim is to serve Tamil communities around the world and others interested in learning Tamil.

The three certificate levels

The academy describes the Certificate course as training in language skills at Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels, taking students to the level of class 6 of the standard schools in Tamil Nadu. Before it comes a Primer programme with rhymes and the alphabet, for beginners. The examination system has a separate module for each level: a Basic exam module, an Intermediate exam module and an Advanced exam module.

How the examinations work

The academy's frequently asked questions describe its examination pattern. They describe it in terms of papers, so check the rules and regulations for your own level as well.

  • Two parts: continuous assessment and a term-end assessment.
  • Continuous assessment: tests conducted online, only after a minimum of 12 weeks from registration. It carries 25 marks.
  • Term-end examination: held only after a minimum of 6 months from registration, at the academy's study or contact centres. It carries 75 marks, for a total of 100.
  • Sessions: twice a year, in June and December.
  • Length: the term-end examination for each paper lasts 3 hours.

Two practical consequences follow. The term-end examination comes at least six months after registration, and it is taken at a centre, so check the academy's list of contact centres for one you can reach.

Which level to choose

  • You are new to Tamil: start with the Primer, then the Basic level, which matches classes 1 and 2.
  • You read and write at about the level of classes 3 and 4: Intermediate.
  • You read and write at about the level of classes 5 and 6: Advanced.

How to prepare

  1. Learn the script fully: 12 vowels, 18 consonants and their 216 compound characters.
  2. Work through the lessons for your level on the academy's website, in order.
  3. Test yourself after every lesson, and return to it after a day, a week and a month.
  4. Use the academy's exam question bank for practice.
  5. Read and listen to Tamil every day, and speak it.

One caution: the academy's lesson pages state that their videos use Flash and are visible only after enabling the plug-in, so check that they play on your device. Language Lab's Tamil course is built around voiced real-life scenarios with an AI tutor, which adds speaking practice to your exam preparation.
