Learn Tamil for Free: Official Courses

By Language Lab editorial team

Learn Tamil for free: the Open University's free beginners' course and the Tamil Nadu government's Tamil Virtual Academy, with what each offers and costs.

Learn Tamil for Free: Official Courses
Quick answer

Two public institutions teach Tamil online, and one of them is free from start to finish. The Open University's Beginners' Tamil: a taster course is a free course on its OpenLearn site: it introduces the script and sounds, greetings, introductions and the numbers to ten, with audio, and gives a free statement of participation if you create an account and enrol. The Tamil Virtual Academy, which works under the Government of Tamil Nadu to provide Tamil education through the internet, publishes primer and certificate-level lessons on its website and runs graded courses from beginner level to a degree. Its courses carry modest registration and examination fees, so treat it as a low-cost path, not a free one. Start with the free course, then decide whether you want a certificate.

The Open University's free course

Beginners' Tamil: a taster course is described by the Open University as a free course that gives a brief introduction to the Tamil language and its scripts and sounds. You learn how to greet people and introduce yourself and how to count from one to ten, and you are introduced to Tamil society and culture, including food and music.

  • The Tamil language: its age, where it is spoken and its official status.
  • Tamil script: the 12 vowels, the 18 consonants and how they combine.
  • The sound of Tamil: audio of the compound characters.
  • Greetings: essential expressions in Tamil script with pronunciation and audio.
  • Names and introductions: sentences for talking about yourself.
  • Numbers: zero to ten, with audio.

You can read the course pages without an account. To use the interactive activities and to receive the free statement of participation, you create a free account and enrol. It is a taster, so expect a first step, not a full course.

The Tamil Virtual Academy

The Tamil Virtual Academy, TVA, was established as the Tamil Virtual University and works under the Tamil Nadu government's Information Technology Department; it took its present name on 16 July 2010. Its stated main aim is to provide Tamil education through the internet for the Tamil diaspora and to promote Tamil computing, and its vision statement includes others interested in learning Tamil.

The academy's website has a Lessons section with primer lessons and certificate lessons at all three levels. One caution, from the lesson pages themselves: they state that their videos use Flash and are visible only after enabling the plug-in in the browser, so check that the lessons play on your device before you rely on them.

What the academy charges

The academy's approved fee structure lists a course registration fee of US $15 for candidates registering from outside India, or INR 400 from India, for each level of the Certificate course, and an examination fee of US $5 or INR 150 for each level and appearance. It also notes a 50% discount on registration fees for candidates registering from countries such as the Gulf countries and Sri Lanka. The fee page was last updated on 4 January 2025; confirm the current figures on the academy's site before you pay.

Start with the script

Whichever route you take, begin with the writing system. The current Tamil script has 12 vowels, 18 consonants and one special character, the āytam. Vowels and consonants combine to form 216 compound characters, giving 247 in total. Every consonant carries an inherent vowel a, which is removed by adding a small mark called a pulli. Tamil is written from left to right.

A free weekly plan

  • Week one: the Open University course, one section a day, with the audio.
  • Daily, 10 minutes: write the 12 vowels and 18 consonants from memory, then check.
  • Daily, 5 minutes: the phrases above, aloud.
  • From week two: primer and basic-level lessons, if they play on your device.
  • Each week: repeat last week's material before starting new lessons.

The plan relies on practice testing and distributed practice, the two techniques a 2013 review of learning research rated as high utility. Free material gives you script, sounds and first sentences. Speaking needs practice of its own. Language Lab's Tamil course is built around voiced real-life scenarios with an AI tutor, which supplies spoken practice.
