Moving to Kazakhstan: Why Russian Is the Practical Language to Learn
By Language Lab editorial team
Moving to Kazakhstan? Why Russian remains the everyday lingua franca alongside Kazakh, the migration registration, and how to prepare.
What language do you need to move to Kazakhstan?
Kazakhstan is officially bilingual, and understanding the split guides your preparation. Kazakh is the state language, promoted strongly and increasingly present in government, education and signage. But Russian remains the everyday lingua franca of business, cities and administration — especially in Almaty, the largest city, and widely in Astana — and it is what most people reach for in shops, offices and daily conversation. For a newcomer, Russian is the more practical language to learn first, while a few Kazakh courtesies are warmly received.
The Cyrillic alphabet is the first unlock for Russian (Kazakh also uses Cyrillic for now, though a Latin transition is underway). English is rare once you leave international companies and central districts, so functional Russian is what carries you through the migration police, banking, renting and the doctor.
Migration registration
After arrival you complete temporary registration with the migration police within a few days, and for longer stays you apply for a residence permit. Deadlines after entry are strict, so this is an early priority. The process is conducted in Russian (and Kazakh), so knowing the vocabulary of registration helps you meet the deadlines without stress.
| Russian (transliteration) | English |
|---|---|
| Zdravstvuyte | Hello (polite) |
| Mne nuzhno zaregistrirovat'sya | I need to register |
| Gde migratsionnaya politsiya? | Where is the migration police? |
| Ya khochu otkryt' bankovskiy schyot | I want to open a bank account |
| Ya ishchu kvartiru v arendu | I'm looking for an apartment to rent |
| Rakhmet (Kazakh) | Thank you (a warmly received courtesy) |
The visa side
Movers use work, business or family routes; longer stays require a residence permit, and registration deadlines after entry are strict. Confirm current requirements with the Kazakh migration authorities before you travel.
How to prepare
Learn the Cyrillic alphabet first, then build functional Russian for the migration police, banking and daily life, and pick up a few Kazakh greetings as a courtesy. Rehearse the real situations out loud — registration, the bank, an apartment viewing. Language Lab teaches practical Russian for relocation through voiced scenarios and Sonia, a live AI tutor you speak with out loud, across 50 languages, free to start. Frequently asked
Should I learn Kazakh or Russian for Kazakhstan?
For everyday practicality, Russian first. It remains the lingua franca of business, cities and administration, especially in Almaty and widely in Astana, and it's what most people use day to day. Kazakh is the state language and growing in official use, so a few Kazakh courtesies are warmly received, but Russian is the more useful starting point for a newcomer.
Do I need the Cyrillic alphabet for Kazakhstan?
Yes. Russian uses Cyrillic, and Kazakh currently does too (a Latin-script transition is underway). Learning to read Cyrillic is the first practical unlock for signage, forms and the migration registration process.
