Best App to Learn Portuguese: What to Check

By Language Lab editorial team

Best app to learn Portuguese: seven things to check before you choose, what Portuguese asks of an app, official material to pair it with and a one-week test.

Best App to Learn Portuguese: What to Check
Quick answer

The best app to learn Portuguese is the one that teaches the variety you need and makes you speak it. Portuguese is one of the quickest languages for an English speaker: the US State Department lists it at 24 weeks of classes, at the short end of its easiest category. The first decision is yours, not the app's: European or Brazilian Portuguese. Then check seven things: the variety stated clearly, native audio in that variety, spoken practice with a response, self-testing, spaced review, real-life situations, and levels that follow the official exams from A1 upward. An app that mixes the two varieties without telling you will confuse your pronunciation. Pair it with Portugal's free online platform if you are learning European Portuguese, and try it for a week before you pay.

What Portuguese asks of an app

  • One variety. Choose European or Brazilian Portuguese first, and check that the app's audio matches.
  • The sounds early, especially the nasal ones.
  • Verb endings as sets. Each tense has six endings, and the app should drill them in sentences.
  • Shared vocabulary. Portuguese shares many words with English, and a good course uses them.

Seven things to check

CheckWhat to look for
SpeakingYou say sentences aloud and get a spoken or written response, in situations you will meet.
AudioRecordings by native speakers of the variety you chose.
Writing systemPortuguese uses the Latin alphabet; check that the app teaches the accents and nasal marks through audio.
Self-testingThe app makes you produce the answer before it shows it.
Spaced reviewOld material comes back after days and weeks, not only in the lesson where you met it.
Real situationsLessons are built on things you will do: meeting people, shopping, travelling, working.
LevelsStages are named, and you can see how they relate to an official scale or exam.

Why testing and spacing come first

A 2013 review of ten learning techniques, led by John Dunlosky, rated two as high utility: practice testing and distributed practice. Rereading and highlighting were rated low. So an app that makes you produce an answer, and brings items back after a gap, is using your time better than one that lets you tap through and move on.

Test an app in one week

  1. Day 1: do the first lesson. Did you speak aloud, or only tap?
  2. Day 2: start a new lesson. Did the app bring back yesterday's material?
  3. Day 3: check the audio. Is every Portuguese sentence recorded, and can you replay it?
  4. Day 4: look for the level map. Can you see where the course ends?
  5. Day 5: try to say five sentences from memory. If you cannot, the app is not testing you enough.
  6. Day 7: decide. Keep the app only if you spoke every day.

Pair it with official material

  • Plataforma de Português Online, from AIMA, Portugal's agency for integration, migration and asylum: 24 thematic modules at levels A and B, with free access.
  • Talk Portuguese, from the BBC: an archived online course for beginners.
  • CAPLE example exams, from the University of Lisbon.

Aim at a level

Portugal's official exams are run by CAPLE at the University of Lisbon: ACESSO at A1, CIPLE at A2, DEPLE at B1 and DIPLE at B2, with two further diplomas at C level. Choose an app whose levels follow the same framework, and check which variety it teaches.

A note on our own app

Language Lab is our app, so judge it by the same list. Language Lab's Portuguese course is built around voiced real-life scenarios with an AI tutor. Use the one-week test above on it as you would on any other.

Frequently asked

What is the best app to learn Portuguese?

The one that makes you speak Portuguese aloud, tests you before showing the answer, brings old material back for review and shows you clear levels. Try it for a week before paying.

Should I learn European or Brazilian Portuguese?

Choose the one you will use, and stick to material in it. Check that an app says which variety it teaches and that its audio matches.

How long does it take to learn Portuguese?

The US State Department lists Portuguese at 24 weeks of classes, at the short end of its easiest category. An app does not shorten that; it helps you use the time well.

Are free Portuguese apps enough?

Official learning material is a strong start: Plataforma de Português Online, from AIMA, Portugal's agency for integration, migration and asylum is one example. Whatever you use, check that you are speaking and being tested.

What features matter most in a language app?

Practice testing and spaced review, the two techniques a 2013 research review rated as high utility, and spoken practice with a response.

Can an app make me fluent in Portuguese?

An app can carry your daily practice. You will also need conversation with people and a structured course or exam target for the higher levels.
