Best App to Learn Greek: What to Check

By Language Lab editorial team

Best app to learn Greek: seven things to check before you choose, what Greek asks of an app, official material to pair it with and a one-week test.

Best App to Learn Greek: What to Check
Quick answer

The best app to learn Greek is the one that teaches the alphabet first and uses audio for every word. Greek takes time for an English speaker: the US State Department places it in Category III, hard languages, and allows about 44 weeks, or 1,012 class hours. The start is kinder than it looks, because the alphabet has only 24 letters and each word carries an accent mark that shows the stress. Check seven things before you choose: the alphabet taught first, native audio, spoken practice with a response, self-testing, spaced review, real-life situations, and levels from A1 to C2 as in Greece's official certificate. Pair the app with Staellinika, the free official platform, and try it for a week before you pay.

What Greek asks of an app

  • The 24 letters first, with attention to the ones that look like English letters and sound different.
  • Stress from the accent mark. The app should show the written accent and play the word.
  • Articles with nouns. Greek has three genders, so each noun should come with its article.
  • Familiar roots. The BBC's guide estimates that around 30% of English vocabulary comes, directly or indirectly, from Classical Greek.

Seven things to check

CheckWhat to look for
SpeakingYou say sentences aloud and get a spoken or written response, in situations you will meet.
AudioRecordings by native speakers for every word, so that you hear the stress.
Writing systemThe Greek alphabet in the first lessons, with audio for each letter and no long use of Latin-letter spellings.
Self-testingThe app makes you produce the answer before it shows it.
Spaced reviewOld material comes back after days and weeks, not only in the lesson where you met it.
Real situationsLessons are built on things you will do: meeting people, shopping, travelling, working.
LevelsStages are named, and you can see how they relate to an official scale or exam.

Why testing and spacing come first

A 2013 review of ten learning techniques, led by John Dunlosky, rated two as high utility: practice testing and distributed practice. Rereading and highlighting were rated low. So an app that makes you produce an answer, and brings items back after a gap, is using your time better than one that lets you tap through and move on.

Test an app in one week

  1. Day 1: do the first lesson. Did you speak aloud, or only tap?
  2. Day 2: start a new lesson. Did the app bring back yesterday's material?
  3. Day 3: check the audio. Is every Greek sentence recorded, and can you replay it?
  4. Day 4: look for the level map. Can you see where the course ends?
  5. Day 5: try to say five sentences from memory. If you cannot, the app is not testing you enough.
  6. Day 7: decide. Keep the app only if you spoke every day.

Pair it with official material

  • Staellinika: free beginner courses for children, teenagers and adults, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece and partners.
  • The Centre for the Greek Language's online diagnostic tests, at each level from A1 to C2.
  • A Guide to Greek and Talk Greek, from the BBC: archived introductions with audio.

Aim at a level

The official qualification is the Certificate of Attainment in Greek, run by the Centre for the Greek Language. It has six levels, A1 to C2, matched to the European framework, and tests listening, reading, writing and speaking. Choose an app whose levels follow the same scale.

A note on our own app

Language Lab is our app, so judge it by the same list. Language Lab's Greek course is built around voiced real-life scenarios with an AI tutor. Use the one-week test above on it as you would on any other.

Frequently asked

What is the best app to learn Greek?

The one that makes you speak Greek aloud, tests you before showing the answer, brings old material back for review and shows you clear levels. Try it for a week before paying.

Is the Greek alphabet hard to learn?

It has 24 letters, and some look like English letters but sound different. A good app teaches the alphabet first, with audio, and then stops using Latin-letter spellings.

How long does it take to learn Greek?

The US State Department places Greek in Category III and allows about 44 weeks, or 1,012 class hours. An app does not shorten that; it helps you use the time well.

Are free Greek apps enough?

Official learning material is a strong start: Staellinika is one example. Whatever you use, check that you are speaking and being tested.

What features matter most in a language app?

Practice testing and spaced review, the two techniques a 2013 research review rated as high utility, and spoken practice with a response.

Can an app make me fluent in Greek?

An app can carry your daily practice. You will also need conversation with people and a structured course or exam target for the higher levels.
